There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.
-Martha Graham
Creativity is, indeed, the most natural, the most common way of what you call ‘channeling.’
This word creates an aura of rarity, but substitute, ‘inspiration’ and your feet land on the familiar.
Such a simple substitution, but an important one for what we have talked so much about here, in this course. It is not rare, it is not special. Everyone has felt the rush of excitement in a new idea. A project. A vision. An opportunity.
It is the most human of human things – these flashes.
When you purposefully link your mind with the larger mind, the great consciousness from which you came and ever belong, when you enter happily into that partnership, you elevate, enrich, and vastly multiply your access to ideas, to inspiration, to genius.
We’ve spoken before in this course of the pathways, the ways, the means to accomplish that linking. It is through solitude, through meditation, through nature, through bliss, through joy. It appears when you are receptive, willing and joyful. It alights in the minds of the free and the happy.
Cultivate your self. Become the springtime. Make your self ready. Then listen.
Catch even the faintest of whispers. Listen for them like they are a shy child needing all your encouragement and love before being able to entrust you with their cherished dreams.
You must be that patient, that loving.
At first.
Once trust is established you will find catching the ideas, the words, the images, the songs, the stories, the inventions, much easier. The voice will grow louder, will grow clearer, and you will be told more and more.
Know that you are in partnership. Know that you have been entrusted with the future. Know that you are translating love into matter. Know how important and valued you are in this partnership. In this, the holiest and most important of work. For in the shaping of ideas, you are shaping minds, you are impacting the future.
You become a translator of Love. A mystic of art.
You become a bridge between the Holy and the material.
At this point take care to not stumble. The temptation here is falling prey to the clutches and praise of the ego.
This is your only true test.
Honour your partnership. Know your role. And you will be gifted even more. You will be lifted higher.
You have seen those among you. The ones of so-called genius.
You hold this potential. It is a doorway within you, always open. It is real and it is close.
Look down. See your path. Step forward.
Listen for the whispers. Catch the ideas.
Trust. Trust. Trust.
Know that you are worthy of this partnership – you holy artist. Make real that which is currently but a dream.
And know that you are never alone.
We love you so much,
This is my favourite lesson in the course, so far.
Because it is about that sacred space where art and spirituality meet. And it is within that space that I most love to be. It is within that space that I feel happiest and most fully myself.
For decades I was, primarily, a fiction writer. I had a novel published, as well as dozens of short stories, and was awarded several grants. There was a pride in all of that, but eventually, an emptiness.
I began to question why it mattered to have good reviews, fans, awards, to be a bestseller (not that I had those things, but I certainly was positioning myself to climb as high on that ladder as possible).
I’d had just enough ‘success’ to one day wake up and realize that I was seeking validation from the outside world because I didn’t particularly like myself very much.
It was a wake-up call. It was a breakdown. It was a turning point.
Looking back, I feel fortunate that I had been a serious yoga student for twenty-one years at that point. It provided me with an ancient wisdom to lean on, and to delve deeper into. I decided to keep writing, but stop publishing, and I got certified as a yoga teacher.
What followed was several years of various therapies and healing modalities, spiritual exploration and, surprisingly, increasing joy.
Eventually, the very first Dear Heart Love Soul letter flowed out of my pen.
Through this wonderful gift that has been my experience of ‘channeling’ (to be honest, even now, I don’t know how comfortable I am with that word) I melded the two most important parts of myself – art and spirituality.
To me, that is what this lesson is about. It’s not about writing to get published, or to get readers. (Although there is nothing wrong with that at all. My younger self was doing it from an unhealthy place, and that was a problem.) It is about art as an exploration and expression of our humanity, and also, our spiritual self. It’s about connection, not competition. It’s about, finally, fully becoming one’s self, and not trying to hide, change, or be anyone else.
Because the greatest gift you can give the world is to be your most authentic and loving self.
When you finally get that – that you are not only enough, but you are perfect as the Divine Being that you are, there is such a feeling of peace, joy and purpose. And inspiration.
May you live and create from that place, that Truth, today and always. The world truly needs what only you can bring into being through your inspiration. Through your blessed creativity.
Sending so much love,
Can you believe that next week is the last lesson of the 12-Week course, “How to be A Channel”? We’ll be back next Monday with our regular Dear Heart Love Soul letter. And then next Thursday we wrap up the course!
Thanks for reading. Thanks for being here. Thanks for being your beautiful self. Until next time, be well.

this whole essay is a great instruction and guidance on what it's like to be a creative
This is my favourite lesson, too. I feel that connection when my writing flows and I know to trust it. Creativity is a spiritual act, I think. I’m noting the presence of ego. Thank you for all of this, Lori! I don’t want the course to end! ✨
